One of many extra inexplicable particulars within the film model of The Phantom of the Opera consists of Christine confessing to her buddy Meg that when she and Raoul have been kids, he nicknamed her Little Lotte. Lotte was a typical diminutive nickname for Charlotte, not Christine. It appeared that the dialogue was merely added to clarify to the viewers why they then sing a duet about Little Lotte.
So why does Andrew Lloyd Webber have a duet about Little Lotte in his musical, then? Easy. It's within the authentic story by Gaston Leroux.
Now we get to the crux of the problem. Within the 1980's, when Phantom first debuted, nobody knew who Little Lotte was. The offhand reference within the lyrics made no sense to most theater-goers. However on the time when Leroux was writing his e book, readers would have identified precisely what he was referring to.
Little Lotte is a parlor recreation, just like Twenty Questions, the place one individual is aware of the reply, and different individuals attempt to guess it. However on this case, the individual lists three objects, and the others should guess which of the three Little Lotte prefers. The key is hinted at by the secret – Little Lotte prefers objects with double consonants of their names.
So now, we have now the lyrics: Little Lotte thought am I fonder of dolls or of goblins or footwear?
The right reply needs to be dolls as a result of it has the double-L. Since they each know the reply, they don’t trouble answering, merely posing the following set.
Or of riddles or frocks? Or of sweets?
Once more, Lotte would like riddles, due to the double-D.
You may see why the sport shortly fell out of favor. As soon as the key, there's no problem. And that's why trendy theater-goers wanted a proof for who Little Lotte was.
